Setup Guides

Plan it, build it, organize it, style it. Start with the setup guide if you are beginning from an empty corner; the rest go deeper on budget, DIY builds, storage and looks.

The short version · full setup guide

  1. 01

    Choose the location

Find a spot within about 3 feet of a power outlet, a short walk from a sink, and out of the main cooking zone. Avoid direct afternoon sun and the area next to the stove.

  2. 02

    Measure the space

Measure width, depth and the height under anything above. Plan on 24 x 16 in for one machine, 36 x 18 in for a machine plus grinder, and 48 in or wider for a full espresso bar.

  3. 03

    Check the power

Add up the wattage of what will run at the same time. A 15-amp circuit tops out at 1,800 W, so a kettle and an espresso machine heating together can trip the breaker.

  4. 04

    Pick the furniture and surface

Use an existing counter, a cabinet, a cart, a console table, or shelves over a narrow table. Make sure it holds the machine's weight and the top is sealed or covered with a mat.

  5. 05

    Get the essentials

Coffee maker, burr grinder, kettle and daily mugs, plus an airtight bean canister, a tray for sweeteners, a mug rack and a drip mat under the machine.

  6. 06

    Arrange the workflow

Line things up in the order you use them: mugs, beans, grinder, brewer, then milk and sugar. Daily items stay on the surface, everything else goes below or on a shelf above.

  7. 07

    Light it and style it

Add a warm white (2700-3000K) LED strip under the shelf or cabinet above for task light. Then a 2-3 tone palette, one plant, one sign or print, and matching containers.
